The Amish were formed, and came out of the Mennonites. The word Amish originates from a man by the name of Jacob Amman. The word Mennonite originates from a man by the name of Menno Simons. Mr. Amman was an elder in the Mennonite movement, and broke away because of a disagreement(s). The Amish movement would recognize Jacob as their apostle, and prophet, while the Mennonites would recognize Menno as their apostle, and prophet. Just like Joseph Smith, and the Mormon movement. The majority of the people who call themselves Amish, or Mennonite, are actually from Switzerland. Before they split apart, and went separate ways, they were a group known as the Swiss brethren. So, who are the Amish? Swiss following a movement formed by Jacob Amman. Italians come from Italy, Mexicans from Mexico, Swiss from Switzerland. So putting aside all religious movements, we are just another group of people, giving up our home country, for a country called America, longing to be free, to be identified with something, and someone.
